Further Reading:  Koh-I-Noor’s European roots date back to 1790 when Josef Hardtmuth founded an earthenware factory in Vienna, using clay as the foundation for his future pencil empire. In 1802, he patented the first Hardtmuth graphite lead, combining clay and graphite for varying softness. By 1848, he moved his growing factory to České Budějovice, where the Hardtmuth family set standards for innovation in art materials. Franz Hardtmuth developed the graphite degree system, using H for the family name, B for Budweiss, and F for himself, which remains the standard for artist-grade leads today.
